1922 - At the age of 21 he worked at Meier & Frank (Department Store) as a tie salesman.

1924 - He married Josephine Dillon.

1930 - He was offered a contract with MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc.).  

       - He and his wife Josephine Dillon were divorced, A few days later, he married Texas socialite Ria Franklin Prentiss Lucas Langham.

1931 - His first role in a sound picture was as the villain in a low-budget movie called "The Painted Desert".

1934 - He won the Academy Awards for Best Actor for his performance in the film "It Happened One Night" (a romantic comedy movie).

1939 - He was nominated in Academy Award Best Actor category in the movie "Gone With The Wind".
       - He married (for the third time) Carole Lombard, a successful actress.

1942 - He joined the U.S. Army Air Force during the World War I.

1949 - He married Sylvia Ashley but they divorced after 3 years.

1960 - Died on the 16th of November.
