1914 - Born on the 17th of August in Campobello, New Brunswick, Canada.

 

1933 - Graduated from Groton School, Groton, Mass.

 

1937 - Finished a degree at Harvard University.

 

1940 - Marked off from University of Virginia Law School at Charlottesville.

 

1941 - Naval Reserve called him and he served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.

 

1942 - Admitted to the bar.

 

1947-1948 - Received the following awards: Purple Heart Medal and the Silver Star.

 

        - Lawyer and the vice-president of the Committee on Civil Rights under the Truman administration.

 

1948-1949 - Chairman of mayor's committee on unity in New York city.

 

1951 - Shifted from being a Liveral to being a Democrat on January 3 and he got elected as a Democrat to the

Eighty-second Congress.

 

1952 - Representative for Democratic National Conventions.

 

1958 - Ventured into automobile import business.

 

 1963 - Took on as Undersecretary of Commerce under Kennedy administration.

 

1965 - first Chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

 

1988 - He died 17th of August in Poughkeepsie, New York.
