1968 - 1971 - Staff of Mayor Kevin White of Boston, Massachusetts.

1971 - 1972 - Staff of United States Representative Michael F. Harrington of Massachusetts.

1973 - 1980 - Member of the Massachusetts state legislature.

1977 - J.D. graduate of Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

1981 - Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-seventh and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses and chair ofCommittee on Financial Services (One Hundred Tenth Congress).

1998 - He founded the National Stonewall Democrats, the national gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Democratic organization.

2006 - He provoked the ire of Veteran's Groups as one of only three Representatives to oppose the Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act, which restricted protests (notably those of Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church) at soldiers' funerals. He opposed the bill, which passed unanimously in the Senate, on civil liberties and constitutional grounds.
