1858 - Born on June 19th into a rural New England farm family. A poet, journalist, and humorist, Sam Walter Foss is best known for his inspirational poem, The House By the Side of the Road.
1882 - He graduated from Portsmouth (New Hampshire) High School, and obtained a bachelor's degree from Brown University.
1891 - Moved to Boston where he wrote first for the Yankee Blade and later the Boston Globe.
1898 - He was the librarian of the Somerville Public Library in Massachusetts.
1899 - One of Foss’s books was entitled Songs of war and Peace was published.
1907 - Published his book Songs of the Average Man.
1911 - Died on February 26th at the age of 52.
