1948 - Born on March 4th in Los Angeles, California. American author James Ellroy, long regarded a master of the crime-fiction genre.

1958 - James' mother Geneva Hilliker Ellroy was strangled when he was only 10 years old.

1965-1977 - He grew up to be a wino and petty thief with 30 arrests.

1987 - "The Black Dahlia" was his seventh novel. It was based on the murder of Elizabeth Short.

2001 - Continued his move into the realm of general fiction with the publication of his novel The Cold Six Thousand in May.
