1936 – He was made Governor of Guadeloupe, France.
1939 – He was transferred to Chad.
1940 – He was instrumental in developing Chadian support for the Free French .
– As Governor of the whole area, he acted to improve the status of Africans.
1941 – His circular La nouvelle politique indigène ("New Native Policy"), put out on the 8th of November.
1944 – He died on the 17th of March because of heart attack.
