1974 – He was re-elected to the United States Senate.

1987 – He returned to St. Louis as an Attorney, Political Commentator, and Professor at Washington University

             in St. Louis.

2001 – He joined other Missouri Democrats to oppose the nomination of former Missouri Governor John Ashcroft

             for United State Attorney General.

2007 – He died on the 4th of March because of heart and respiratory complications.
