1923 - Born on February 2nd in Atlanta, Georgia. Dickey achieved a measure of fame that eluded most poets at that time.
1950 - Having earned an M.A., he returned to the military during the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Air force.
1955-1961 - He worked for advertising agents in New York and Atlanta.
1962 - After the publication of his first book, "Into the Stone", he left advertising and began teaching at various colleges and universities.
1965 - Dickey's third novel, "Buckdancer's Choice", won the prestigious National Book Award in Poetry.
1969 - Published his fiction book "Deliverance".
1977 - He read his poem, "The Strength of Fields", at President Carter's inauguration.
1993 - Published his fiction book "To the White Sea".
1997 - Died on January 19th in Columbia, South Carolina.
