1964 – He earned a BA in history at Stanford University.

1967 – He then returned to New York to attend Columbia Law School.

1967 – 1969 – Entered active duty in the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War.

1974 – 1981 – Served as the Chief of Staff to Governor Jerry Brown.

1983 – 1987 – Became California State Assemblyman.

1987 – 1995 – He was the California State Controller.

1995 – 1999 – Served as the Lieutenant Governor of California.

1999 – 2003 – Became the 37th Governor of California.

2002 – He was elected as Governor of California.

2003 – On 7th of October, he became the second governor to be recalled in American history.

       – Succeeded by Republican Arnold A. Schwarzenegger on 17th of November after the recall election.

2004 – He announced that he was joining the law firm of Loeb & Loeb.

2005 – In a CNN interview on the 5th of August, he noted that although he had been urged to run for Governor of California again by some Democrats , he had no interest in running.

2007 – He was appointed to the Board of Directors of animation company DiC Entertainment, as a non-executive.
