1899 - Born in Quitman, Louisiana, on the 11th of September to Sarah Elizabeth Works and Samuel Jones Davis. Graduated from Beech Springs High School and Soule Business College, New Orleans.
1927 - Received his bachelor's degree in history from the Baptist-affiliated Louisiana College in Pineville.
1928 - Finished his master's degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
1938 - 1942 - Served as public safety commissioner of Shreveport.
1940 - Composed and recorded song "You Are My Sunshine".
1942 - 1944 - Public service commissioner of Louisiana.
1944 - 1948 - Served as a Democratic governor of Louisiana.
1960 - 1964 - Once again he was elected governor of Louisiana.
1977 - "You Are My Sunshine" was designated an official state song of Louisiana.
