1899 – Born in Quitman, Louisiana, on the 11th of September to Sarah Elizabeth Works and Samuel Jones Davis. Graduated from Beech Springs High School and Soule Business College, New Orleans.

1927 – Received his bachelor’s degree in history from the Baptist-affiliated Louisiana College in Pineville.

1928 – Finished his master’s degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

1938 – 1942 – Served as public safety commissioner of Shreveport.

1940 – Composed and recorded song "You Are My Sunshine".

1942 – 1944 – Public service commissioner of Louisiana.

1944 – 1948 – Served as a Democratic governor of Louisiana.

1960 – 1964 – Once again he was elected governor of Louisiana.

1977 – "You Are My Sunshine" was designated an official state song of Louisiana.

2000 – He died on 5th of November and was buried in the Davis Family Cemetery in Quitman in Jackson Parish.
