1809 – Elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.


1812 – Became a member of the advisory Virginia Privy Council.


1818 – He was elected Lieutenant Governor.


1836 – President Andrew Jackson appointed him to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.


1841-1860 – Served as Supreme Court justice.


1860 – He died on 31st of May at Richmond, Virginia, USA.
