His original name was Poppo, and he was bishop of Brixen when the Emperor raised him to the papacy.
1048 - In January, Henry III appointed Poppo, as Bishop of Brixen, in Tyrol.
- Became Pope from 17th of July until his death on 9th of August.
His reign led to rumors that he had been poisoned, but it is more likely that he died of malaria.
