He was first appointed and then elected Receiver of Taxes of Hempstead, New York.

 

1977-1981 - Became the presiding supervisor of Nassau County.

 

1981-1999 - Senator from New York.

 

1994 - He insulted Betsy McCaughey Ross, the Republican candidate for New York Lieutenant Governor.

 

1995-1999 - Served as Chairman of Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.

 

       - Wrote memoir "Pasta, Power, and Politics".

 

1998 - D'Amato was criticized for insulting Congressman Jerry Nadler.

 

2004 - On 18th of July, he married Katuria Elizabeth Smith.
