1975 - Graduated with BA English Literature, at Stanford University.
1980 - Graduated with MFA, in University of Iowa.
1993 - He received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
1998 - Received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
1995 - He was awarded the Whiting Writers' Award. Cunningham teaches at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts and at Brooklyn College.
