1939 - Francis Ford Coppola, born on the 7th of April to Carmine Coppola, at the time first flautist for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and his wife Italia in Detroit, Michigan.

1960 - Graduated with BA Drama, in Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York.

1963 - Married, Eleanor Jessie Neil, film director.

1967 - Graduated with MFA, University of California at Los Angeles.

1971 - Like his contemporaries Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, studied films and filmmaking in college. His first break came as a screenwrite, he won his first Oscar for writing Patton, the movie based on the life of George S. Patton, Jr.

1972 - He had formed his own production company, and in he released The Godfather, a box office smash and often hailed as one of the best movies.

1969 - 1997 - He is considered one of the greats in the American movie business, more active as a producer these days than as a writer or director. His films as director include The Rain People with James Caan; The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, based on the books by S.E. Hinton; Tucker: The Man and His Dream, starring Jeff Bridges; Dracula, starring Gary Oldman; and The Rainmaker with Matt Damon.

1999 - His daughter, Sofia Coppola, made her directorial and screenwriting debut.

2003 - The Virgin Suicides and directed the critically-acclaimed Lost in Translation.
