1954 - When she was 7, the family joined a cult called Moral Re-Armament, which seeks to improve human society by providing dogmatic guidelines for better human behavior.

1969 - Married to Cabot Wade.

1974 - She studied drama at the College of William and Mary, and made her Broadway debut in a production of Love for Love.

1980 - She was also nominated as Best Featured Actress (Musical) for "Barnum".

1982 - Her film debut came, as Robin Williams' arch-feminist mother in The World According to Garp.

1984 - Married to James Marlas.

         - Has won three Tony Awards: twice as Best Actress (Play), for Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing" and for "Death and the Maiden", and once as Best Actress (Musical), for "Sunset Boulevard", playing Norma Desmond, a role originally created by Gloria Swanson in Billy Wilder's film, Sunset Blvd.

1987 - Was the fourth choice to play the role of Alex in Fatal Attraction. The first choices were Debra Winger, Barbara Hershey, and Miranda Richardson.

1994 - Chosen by Andrew Lloyd Webber to replace Patti LuPone in 'Sunset Boulevard' before its arrival on Broadway.

1995 - She became engaged to Steve Beers.
