helped persuade Truman to extend diplomatic recognition to Israel 1948

 

head of Kennedy's presidential transition team 1960-1961

 

chairman of President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board 1963-1968

 

Secretary of Defense 1968-1969

 

helped investors, actually working for Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), to take over First American Bank in Washington DC (takeover approved by Federal Reserve Board 1981)

 

wrote memoir "Counsel to the President" 1991

 

indicted in BCCI scandal but charges dismissed
