1970 - He was awarded Denmark's prestigious Sonning Award.
1979 - He was music director of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
1984 - He regularly taught at Mainz University in Germany and taught at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1996 - Died near Paris on the 14th of August.
