1948 - Nell Hardy Carter, born on the 13th of September in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a Tony Award-winning American singer and film, stage, and television actress.
1964 - She was raped at age 16, and later endured three miscarriages.
1974 - She appeared alongside Bette Davis in the stage musical Miss Moffat, based on Davis' earlier film The Corn is Green.
1978 - She broke into stardom in the musical Ain't Misbehavin, for which she won a Tony Award.
