1821 – He was born on the 20th of October.

1840 – He went to Paris intending to become a painter but took up writing instead.

         – He wrote verse and plays before turning to writing libretti.

1864 – He wrote the text for Charles Gounod’s Mireille on his own, and collaborated with Eugène Cormon on Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles.

1867 – He wrote the libretti for numerous operas, including Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann.

1872 – He died on the 27th of June.
