1891 – Oliver Carmichael was born. American educator.

         – Received his M.A. from the University of Alabama.

         – Carmichael went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, eventually rose to be chancellor of Vanderbilt University.

1937 – He was the chancellor of Vanderbilt University.

1946 – Became president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

1953 – Took over the presidency of the University of Alabama.
