1919 – He was born on the 3rd of June in La Grange, Ga.
1940 – Ely grew up in Georgia and graduated from Emory University.
1982 – He bought half of Hickory Sticks, the company was renamed to Callaway Hickory Stick USA.
1983 – He became president and moved the company to Carlsbad, California where he reportedly sold clubs out of his Cadillac.
1984 – Callaway bought the rest of the company for $400,000.
1986 – Callaway hired billiard cue designer Richard C. Helmstetter, as a consultant. Helmstetter then becomes chief club designer that same year and installs computer-controlled milling machines for improved surfacing on putters.
2001 – He died on the 5th of July in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
