1873-1875 – He representative from South Carolina.

1877-1879 – He once again, he was elected as Representative from South Carolina.

1880-1887 – He became a African Methodist Episcopal bishop of Texas and Louisiana.

1887 – He died in Washington on the 18th of January, and was buried in Graceland cemetery.
