1903 - He was born on the 7th of September.

1921 - Butterworth attended The Lawrenceville School where he graduated.

1925 - He later attended Princeton University, graduating. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.

1929-1931 - He was the vice consul to the Embassy in Singapore. Following brief posts in Washington and Ottawa, he was assigned to the American Embassy in London.

1942-1944 - Butterworth was first secretary of the American Embassy in Madrid.

1950-1953 - He was US ambassador to Sweden.

1959 - He was 1st US ambasador to EC.

1962-1968 - He was US ambassador to Canada.

1975 - He died on the 31st of March of cirrhosis of the liver.
