1942 - Butterworth was born in Passaic, New Jersey on the 20th of August.

1965-1969 - He received a degree in business administration from the University of Florida, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami.

1974 - Butterworth was a judge in the county and circuit courts of Broward County, when he was appointed sheriff of Broward County.

1978 - He was sheriff of Broward County.

1982 - He was executive director of Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

1984 - He was mayor of Sunrise, Florida.

1987 - He was attorney general of Florida.

2000 - He was Florida presidential campaign chairman for Al Gore.

2006 - Butterworth was dean of the College of Law at St. Thomas University. Butterworth has remained active in politics, endorsing Rod Smith for Governor of Florida.

         - On the 19th of December, governor-elect Charlie Crist named Butterworth as the new secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
