Butler, William Orlando (William)
1791 - Butler was born in Jessamine County, Kentucky and graduated from Transylvania University on the 19th of April.
1812 - He fought in a number of engagements in the Southern states during the War.
1815 - He fought at the Battle of New Orleans on the 8th of January.
1817 - He worked as a lawyer and a politician.
1844 - He was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor.
1846 - On the 29th of June, he was appointed major general of volunteers and commanded the 1st Volunteer Division in the Army of Occupation.
1848 - On the 18th of February, he superseded General Winfield Scott as the commanding general of the American army.
- He left the service on the 18th of August.
1855 - He turned down the govenorship of the Nebraska Territory.
1880 - He died on the 6th of August.
