1835 - Butler was born in Nottinghamshire, England on December 4, 1835.

 

1854 - Attended Shrewsbury School then went to Saint John College in Cambridge, his father's alma mater.

 

1858 - Graduated as the summa cum laude in his chosen degree.

 

1872 - Wrote his satirical novel "Erewhon", the story of an imaginary land, he criticized the customs and manners of contemporary England.
