1866 - Born on the 17th of March in County Wicklow, Ireland.
1888 - He graduated from Carleton College, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
1892 - He was elected as county attorney in Ramsey County.
1894 - He was re-elected.
1896 - Butler joined law firm How and Eller.
1897 - Became How and Butler at the death of Homer C. Eller.
1905 - He accepted an offer to work in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he took care of railroad-related litigation for James J. Hill, but returned to private practice and rejoined Jared How.
1908 - Butler was elected President of the Minnesota State Bar Association.
1912 - He worked in railroad law in Canada, representing, alternately, shareholders of railroad companies and the Canadian government.
1922 - He was nominated to the United States Supreme Court, he was in the middle of winning approximately $12,000,000 for the Toronto Street Railway shareholders.
1891 - He married Annie M. Cronin.
1922 - Supreme Court justice.
1923 - He was confirmed by a wide margin of 61 to 8 and took office on the 2nd of January.
1939 - Died on the 16th of November in Washington, D.C. at the age of 73 while still on the court, and still married to his wife. He is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul.
