1817 - He studied law and was admitted to the bar.

1818 - Married to Harriet Allen.

1821 - He was the district attorney of Albany County.

1825 - He was one of the commissioners to revise the State statutes.

1827 - Became a member of the New York State Assembly.

1831 - He was one of the founders of New York University.

1833 - Appointed as Attorney General by President Andrew Jackson.

1837 - Became the principal professor in New York University.

1858 - Died on November 8th in Paris, France.
