1942 - Richard Marvin Butkus was born in Chicago, Illinois on the 9th of December.
1962 - He played center and linebacker for the University of Illinois. He was twice a unanimous All-American. Won the Chicago Tribune Silver Football as the Big Ten Most Valuable Player. He finished 6th in Heisman Trophy balloting.
1964 - He was named the American Football Coaches Association Player of the Year. He finished 3rd in Heisman Trophy balloting.
1973 - He was forced to retire after multiple knee injuries.
1975 - He filed a lawsuit against the Bears.
1979 - He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
1983 - He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
1985 - The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Florida created an award in his name. He returned to the Bears as a color analyst on radio broadcasts.
1990 - He was named to the Walter Camp All-Century team.
2000 - He was named as the 6th best college football player ever by College Football News. He was announced to be the coach of the Chicago Enforcers of the XFL.
2001 - He was replaced with Ron Meyer for the XFL.
2005 - He coached a high school football team for an ESPN reality show, "Bound for Glory".
