1814-1934 – Burns and his family emigrated to the United States, and he earned his B.A. and Ph.D from Columbia University, studying under Wesley Clair Mitchell.

1953 – He was chairman of Council of Economic Advisors.

1959 – He was president of American Economic Association.

1970 – He became chairman of Federal Reserve Board.

1981 – He was US ambassador to West Germany.

1987 – He died on the 6th of June in Baltimore.
