1917 - John Burgess Wilson, born on the 25th of February in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He was a British novelist, critic and composer. He was also active as a librettist, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist, essayist, travel writer, broadcaster, translator, linguist, and educationalist.
1946 - 1950 - He studied at Xaverian College and Manchester University, lectured at Birmingham University.
1950 - 1954 - Worked for the Ministry of Education, and taught at Banbury Grammar School.
1954 - 1959 - He then became an education officer in Malaya and Brunei.
1962 - 1989 - His many novels include A Clockwork Orange, Earthly Powers, and Any Old Iron.
1965 - His experiences inspired his Malayan Trilogy.
1977 - He wrote several critical studies and film scripts, including Jesus of Nazareth.
1978 - 1984 - His musical compositions include symphonies, a ballet, and an opera. He also wrote under the name of Joseph Kell as well as under his original name.
1993 - He returned to Twickenham, an outer suburb of London, where he owned a house, to die on the 22nd of November. He was 76 years old. His actual death (of lung cancer) occurred at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in the St John's Wood neighbourhood of London. He is thought to have composed the novel Byrne on his deathbed.
