         – Avraham Burg is one of the senior members of the Israeli Labor Party.

1985 – He was appointed by then Prime Minister Shimon Peres to serve as his adviser on Diaspora Affairs.

1988 – Burg was elected to the Knesset on the Alignment Party List, where he was a prominent member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, the Finance Committee and the State Control Committee.

         – He served as the speaker of the 15th Knesset and as Chairman of the Knesset Committee on Education, Arts and Sports, of the 13th Knesset.

1992 – Burg was re-elected to the Knesset, having placed third on the Labor Party list, after the late Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres.

1995 – Burg left the Knesset to become the Executive Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel.

         – He founded the Open Midrasha Center for Jewish Studies, fought against changes to the law of return, and was a member of the Neeman Commission on conversion.

1999 – He was elected Speaker of the Knesset.
