1969 - He served on Zurich's state government with the centrist Radical Party before being elected to the country's ruling seven-member coalition cabinet, the Federal Council.

1970 - As economy minister, he concluded a free trade agreement between Switzerland and the European Economic Community.

1973 - He was elected as vice president.

1974 - He became President of Switzerland (the Swiss presidency rotates each year among the seven cabinet members).

1978 - He resigned from the Swiss government on January 31st.

1998 - Died on June 20th in Grüningen, Zürich, Switzerland.
