1924-1925 - He served in the US Army during World War I; member of Maryland state house of delegates.

1939-1940 - He was member of Virginia state house of delegates.

1949 - He served in the US Army during World War II; US Ambassador to France.

1952-1953 - He was under secretary of state.

1957-1959 - He was US ambassador to West Germany.

1961-1969 - He became US ambassador to Britain.

1973 - He was the 1st US chief liaison to China.

1974 - He became US ambassador to NATO.

1976 - He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

1977 - He was interment on the 5th of December at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, DC.
