Brown, James Gordon (James)
1951 - Gordon Brown was born in Govan, in Glasgow, Scotland on the 20th of February.
1972 - Brown graduated from Edinburgh with First Class Honours M.A. and stayed on to complete his Ph.D.
1972 - While still a student, Brown was elected Rector of the University of Edinburgh, the convener of the University Court.
1975 - Brown served as Rector and he also edited The Red Paper on Scotland.
- Brown served as a temporary lecturer at Edinburgh, but was denied a permanent post due to his political activism.
1976-1980 - He gained employment as a lecturer in Politics at Glasgow College of Technology.
1983 - He then worked as a journalist at Scottish Television, later serving as current affairs editor until his election to parliament.
1979 - In general election, Brown stood for the Edinburgh South constituency, but lost to the Conservative candidate, Michael Ancram.
1983 - Brown was elected to Parliament on his second attempt as a Labour MP for Dunfermline East in general election and became opposition spokesman on Trade and Industry.
1986 - He published a biography of the Independent Labour Party politician James Maxton, the subject of his Ph.D. thesis.
1987-1989 - Brown was Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and then Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.
2007 - He is the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He took office on the 27th of June, three days after becoming leader of the Labour Party.
