1813 - Born in North Yarmouth, Maine. American clergyman and educator.

1831 - He graduated from Dartmouth College.

1837 - Graduated from Andover Theological Seminary.

1840 - Became a professor of oratory and belles-lettres in Dartmouth University.

1847 - He wrote Biographies of Self-Taught Men.

1862 - He wrote the two volumes of Life of Rufus Choate.

1867 - He became the president of Hamilton College.
