1818 – Born in Edinburgh on the 29th of November.


1837 – He emigrated to New York City.


1843 – He moved to Toronto, where he began publication of the Banner, a newspaper supporting the newly formed Free Church of Scotland.


1853 – He began to issue The Globe, a weekly Reform political journal.


1857 – He entered the Canadian Parliament as an independent Liberal for Kent County.


1858 – Rebuilt the Canada West Liberal Party and briefly held office as prime minister.


1865 – 1867 – He resigned from the government and never again sat in the House of Commons, though he sought reelection.


1873 – He entered the Senate.


1874 – Helped negotiate a new reciprocity treaty with the United States.


1880 – Died in Toronto on the 9th of May.
