1949 – Earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina.
1952 – Received a Bachelor of Law degree and a Master of Science degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin.
1953 – She was accredited by the Liberian Supreme Court, as the first woman Liberian lawyer.
– Brooks was admitted as Counselor-at-law to the Supreme Court of Liberia in August.
– Served as Assistant Attorney-General of Liberia.
1954 – Served as part-time Professor of Law at Liberia University.
1956 – She was Liberia’s Vice-President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
1958 – She had a career in government administration and legal education in Liberia before being appointed assistant secretary of state.
1959 – She served as the Federation’s Vice-President for Africa.
1962-1967 – Earned her Doctor of Law degrees, from Shaw University and Howard University.
1969 – She became the first African woman to be elected president of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
