1901 – He was born on the 28th of July in Kensington, near Melbourne, Vic, Australia.
1920 – He immigrated to US.
1921 – He joined Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
1933 – He organized San Francisco local of International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA).
1934 – He led longshoremen’s strike in San Francisco, evolving into three-day general strike.
1935 – He organized seven West Coast ILA locals into Maritime Federation of the Pacific.
1936 – He led five-month strike by Maritime Federation (unauthorized by ILA), then broke with ILA and led Maritime Federation into Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).
1937 – He re-organized Maritime Federation as International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU).
– He became 1st president of International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union.
1938 – He ordered deported by Frances Perkins, but order overturned 1939.
1940 – He ordered deported by House of Representatives and Francis Biddle, but vindicated by Supreme Court.
1949-1950 – He indicted and convicted of perjury for having denied Communist Party membership in oath of naturalization, and sentenced to seven years in prison (conviction overturned on appeal).
1990 – He died on the 30th of March in San Francisco, Calif., U.S.
