1837 - He was born to a family of Congregational missionaries in Izmir, Turkey on the 20th of January.
1856 - Brewer attended college at Wesleyan University and Yale University, graduating from the latter.
1861 - Brewer moved to Kansas and established a law practice. He was named Commissioner of the Federal Circuit Court in Leavenworth.
1870 - He held two other judgeships before being elected to the Kansas Supreme Court, where he served for 14 years.
1884 - He was named to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
1889-1890 - Brewer was nominated by Benjamin Harrison to the United States Supreme Court and confirmed by the Senate.
