- He became the prosecuting attorney for Northampton County.
1855 - Elected as the Governor of North Carolina.
1859 - Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate.
1861 - He was expelled from the Senate for support of the rebellion.
- Appointed Attorney General of the Confederate States on November 21st.
1872 - Died on January 21st in Raleigh, North Carolina.
