1826 – Born in Springfield, Massachusetts. American editor of the Springfield Republican, a Massachusetts paper that took an interest in literary matters and even published verse.
1851 – He took control and soon made the Springfield Republican one of the half-dozen most influential newspapers in the United States.
1865-1869 – Traveled a great deal and sent letters about his travels back to his paper. Those of his Western trip of 1865 were collected in Across the Continent, and those of his sojourn in Colorado, in The Switzerland of America.
1878 – He died in Springfield, Massachusetts.
