1905 – Born on the 23rd of Octber in Zurich, Switzerland.

1924 – Finished high school at Gymnasium, Canton of Zurich.

1927 – Graduated at Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland.

1928 – Took up PhD, at University of Leipzig.

1933 – Served as Professor at Stanford University.

1934 – He left Germany, emigrating to work at Stanford University.

1939 – Became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

         – He worked on atomic energy at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

         – He concentrated on investigations into nuclear induction and nuclear magnetic resonance.

         – With Edward Purcell, co-discovered nuclear magnetic resonance.

1952 – Awarded the Nobel Prize for "development of new ways and methods for nuclear magnetic precision measurements."

1954-1955 – Served for one year as the first Director-General of CERN.

1961 – He was made Max Stein Professor of Physics at Stanford University.

1965 – President of American Physical Society.

1983 – Died on 10th of September in Zurich, Switzerland.
