1776 – William Blackwood was born on the 20th of November. Scottish publisher and founder of the firm of William Blackwood & Sons.
1790 – At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a firm of booksellers in Edinburgh.
1804 – Returned to Edinburgh and opened a shop in South Bridge Street.
– He established himself as a bookseller in Edinburgh.
1816 – He undertook the Scottish agency for John Murray and other London publishers, and gradually drifted into publishing on his own account, removing to Princes Street.
1817 – He started Blackwood’s Magazine.
– Issued the first number of the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine on April 1st.
1834 – He died on 16th of September.
– William Blackwood was succeeded by his two sons, Alexander and Robert, who added a London branch to the firm.
