1984 – Her short story "The Stone Boy" was adapted by the author for the movie.


She is the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award.


1996 – Won the PEN/Faulkner Award in Women in Their Beds: New & Selected Stories.
