1952 – He was ordained as priest of the Diocese of Charleston.

1966 – He was appointed Titular Bishop of Ligura and Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia.

         – He was ordained as bishop on the 26th of April.

1968 – He resigned as auxiliary bishop of Atlanta.

1972 – He became General Secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.

1982 – He was appointed Archbishop of Cincinnati, Ohio.

1983 – He elevated to Cardinal on the 2nd of February.

1996 – He was appointed Archbishop of Chicago.

         – He served as archbishop until his death on 14th of November from pancreatic cancer.

1997 – He wrote memoir "The Gift of Peace".
