1971 – Received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Harvard Law School.

1993-1997 – Served as deputy national security adviser.
1997-2001 – Served as the 19th United States National Security Advisor under President Bill Clinton.

2004 – U.S. Justice Department was investigating him for unlawfully mishandling classified documents by removing them from a National Archives reading room prior to testifying before the 9/11 Commission.
