Italian monk and saint
480 - St.Benedict of Nursia was born at Nursia (Norcia) Italy.
During the Gothic occupation he studied in Groaning Rome.
547 - He died on 21st March.
Benedict founded twelve monasteries, the best known of which was his first monastery at Monte Cassino in the mountains of southern Italy.
The Benediction Rule, one of the more influential documents in Western Civilization.
Benedict is often called "the founder of western Christian monasticism."
1220 - Benedict was canonized as a saint.
1964 - Pope Paul VI, on 24th of October, announced him as the main patron saint of Europe.
Benedict's memorial day is celebrated on 11th of July.
