1927 - Born on the 16th of April in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria, Germany.
1959 - Ratzinger became a professor at the University of Bonn; his inaugural lecture was on "The God of Faith and the God of Philosophy."
1963 - Appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising by Pope Paul VI.
1966 - Joseph Ratzinger was appointed to a chair in dogmatic theology at the University of Tübingen.
1968 - Wrote a book Introduction to Christianity.
1969 - Returned to Bavaria, to the University of Regensburg, a less reformist academic environment.
1972 - He founded the theological journal Communio, with Hans Urs von Balthasar, Henri de Lubac, Walter
Kasper and others.
1977 - Became Catholic archbishop of Munich and Freising.
1981- Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
1993 - Assigned the honorific title of the cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Velletri-Segni
1998 - Elected sub-dean of the College of Cardinals.
2002 - On the 30th of November he was elected dean, taking, as is customary, the title of Cardinal bishop of
the suburbicarian diocese of Ostia.
2005 - He was elected on 19th of April in a papal conclave.
- He succeeded Pope John Paul II, who died on April 2nd.
- Celebrated his Papal Inauguration Mass on 24th of April.
- Took possession of his cathedral, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, on 7th of May.
